Granite countertops are made from natural stone that is extracted from a mountain. First, a large block of granite is extracted from a mountain, usually using explosives. This large block (roughly the size of a minivan) is transported from the mountain to a factory where it will be cut up. This block is designed to be sliced like a loaf of bread at various thicknesses, typically 2CM or 3CM. Each slice of this block is known as a slab, and it is typically 120" long by 70" wide. The slab size will vary depending on the size of the mountain block that was cut. The rough-cut slab will then be laid down on the table to be polished.

The polishing process will begin with 50 grit sandpaper (actually diamonds) and there's plenty of water to remove the saw marks from the cutting. It will then move forwards to 100 grit, then 200 grit, and so on until it extends around 3000 grit. When the granite slab has been polished, it will have a glossy sheen, as seen at the slab yard. This slab has no coating or compounds on it; it is essentially a rock that has been sanded until it is smooth. A fabricator then cuts it to fit on your home's cabinets.
